You are of foreign nationality

Political rights of foreigners at municipal level 

In the canton of Vaud, more than 90,000 people of foreign nationality can vote, elect and be elected at the municipal level, like Swiss citizens. The 2003 Constitution grants them these political rights, when each of the following conditions is met:  

  • Be over 18 years old.

  • Be domiciled in Rolle, with the benefit of a B or C authorization

​​

  • Have had his continuous domicile in the canton of Vaud during the last three years (holding a B, C, Ci, N or F authorization).

​​

  • Have resided continuously in Switzerland for the past ten years (with a B, B student, C, Ci, N, F or L authorization).

People who meet these conditions are automatically entered in the register of their municipality and receive the voting or election material at their place of residence.

What do these political rights allow?

Participating in the life of your municipality is not only living there, it is also:

  • Give your opinion on

  • the objects of votes. Take part in decisions concerning the life of the municipality: culture, sport, education, security,

 

Elect

Choose the candidates who best represent your point of view, during the elections for the Communal Council and the Municipality.

Your rights !

A voter who leaves the canton regains the political rights received before his or her departure if he or she settles again in a Vaud municipality (with the benefit of a B or C authorization).
Special rules apply to international civil servants without diplomatic status and to members of their families.
